Give yourself a chance, you deserve it no matter what
We realize that in the beginning the practice of yoga can be intimidating in many ways and we want to you feel supported and guided through this very awkward 1st phase. We hear many reasons why people think they can't do yoga...such as being too stiff or having different injuries or body pain. All of these are actually the very reasons to be practicing yoga.
Everyone has a beginning place in their bodies and everyone's flexibility and ability level will be different. We honor our bodies where we are today. We make it okay to be where we are today. In this way we practice being kind to ourselves; we practice 'self respect'.
Here is some helpful information for the beginning student:
- start in a beginner or introductory class (we want to teach you how to develop your strengths, not miss them from overdoing)
- mention any physical concerns to the teacher
- use props when suggested, it's better to not push yourself beyond your limits
- rest when you need to regardless of what the rest of the class is doing.
- wear stretchy or loose comfortable clothing that you can move around easily in. (but not so loose that it gets in the way.)
- we have all the props you will need, you don't have to bring anything
- you may also begin initially with a private lesson before you join a class
- tell the teacher if you are in pain in any way during a pose, the teacher is trained to help you.
It really is awkward and unfamiliar for everybody in the beginning. We have to let ourselves be a beginner. We can't expect ourselves to know how to do everything or to look a certain way in the beginning. So if there is one little gem of advise I can offer, it is to let yourself be a beginner.
Too often students leave feeling bad about themselves because they didn't do it "good enough" or as good as the person next to them. This is probably one of the biggest pitfalls to get lost in. Yoga is not meant to be competitive, but more a way of personally growing stronger and flexible physically and mentally, in a very individual, and conscious way.
